Painted for a competition on the theme of religious violence, the work explores the intersection of faith, doubt, and existential crisis. The central image depicts God dying in the sky, formed of clouds and screaming, flanked on the left by corrupt bishops and on the right by a monkey symbolizing atheism and Darwinism. The two sides confront each other in a symbolic mental battle, with a chessboard reinforcing the sense of strategic and philosophical conflict. The composition conveys the stark, sometimes brutal recognition of a universe without divine presence, where the absence of God is felt as a profound and inescapable truth.
Elements of the painting were developed intuitively, allowing for multiple layers of interpretation. For example, a cross on the horizon may suggest either the Crucifixion or a simple gravestone, depending on perspective.
The piece is complemented by an elaborate frame, finished with imitation gold leaf to create a bright, reflective surface. The resulting work blends religious iconography with symbolic, almost scientific, contemplation of belief, doubt, and human understanding.
