This intriguing work takes its inspiration from H. Beam Piper, the American science-fiction writer whose stories, particularly those exploring alternative histories, developed a distinctive vision of the past and future.

Piper’s life and work provide the artist with a fascinating starting point. A collector of antique weapons, Piper died in 1964 following a period of financial difficulty, in circumstances made particularly poignant by themes explored in his own writing. One of his stories, Murder in the Gunroom, even centres on a supposed suicide involving an antique gun collection which ultimately proves to be murder.

The painting presents a troubled Piper surrounded by surreal references to money, mortality and his relentless imagination. Flying banknotes are drawn towards a dark vortex, while his head balances precariously upon the pyramid and Eye of Providence depicted on the US dollar bill, suggesting both financial uncertainty and a life out of balance. Within his head, two tiny figures excavate a tunnel, perhaps representing the constant workings of his imagination, while a bullet hole releases a flowing red river of words made up of the text of one of his novels, symbolising the ideas and stories that continued to occupy his mind.

Combining literary history with dark humour and surreal imagery, the painting offers a thought-provoking portrait of an author whose imagination remained vividly alive throughout his life.
