A dreamlike meditation on sunset, relaxation and the gentle slowing of time, this intriguing work invites the viewer into a surreal landscape where the familiar becomes wonderfully unexpected.
A vast mountain takes the form of a monumental snail, its drooping antenna suggesting tiredness and repose, while a figure rests peacefully upon its back. Another snail slowly makes its way towards the distant setting sun, echoed by the spiralling forms of the sky and shell. Even the delicate antenna extending from the upper corner carries a small, snail-like creature within its ‘hair’, reinforcing the painting’s playful exploration of the softness and unhurried nature of the snail.
The work’s sense of gentle movement and stillness is further echoed in the frame, where a spiralling orange stain extends the visual language of the painting beyond the canvas itself. The result is a whimsical and contemplative work that celebrates slowing down, rest and the passage of time.
