A finely cut and polished section of a natural Amethyst Geode, this remarkable piece—often referred to as a ‘portal’—reveals a mesmerising interior of rich violet and deep purple crystals, elegantly displayed on a bespoke steel stand.
The story of this specimen begins 1.7 to 2 billion years ago in the volcanic landscapes of Ametista do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. As molten lava cooled into basalt, pockets of trapped gases created hollow chambers within the rock. These voids, over the course of unimaginable geological time, became the birthplace of extraordinary crystal formations.
Silica-rich waters, infused with trace elements such as iron, slowly permeated these cavities. As the conditions stabilised, quartz began to crystallise across the interior surfaces. With the rare combination of pressure, temperature, and mineral composition, the quartz matured into its prized purple form—amethyst—layer upon layer of shimmering points growing in harmony.
It is this delicate alchemy of volcanic forces and mineral-rich fluids that makes the amethyst geodes of Ametista do Sul so coveted. Each is a geological time capsule, a treasure that unites natural history and aesthetic wonder, revealed only when the basalt is opened to expose its dazzling crystal heart.
The portal measures approximately:
Length: 100 cm / 39 ¼ in.
Width from: 23 cm to 6 cm / 9 in. to 2 ⅓ in.
Depth approx. 6 cm / 2 ⅓ in.
The Amethyst Portal weighs approximately 22 kg or 48 ½ lb
