The work conveys a sense of anxiety and inner turmoil, distilled from the original concept of a choice between two paths. Two Aramaic symbols are included as subtle references to this idea of divergent outcomes.
The imagery draws on the biblical story of the Sacrifice of Isaac, with the figure lying on a stone altar and accompanied by a sheep and storm elements. The composition echoes themes of sacrifice and moral tension, reminiscent of similar symbolic references in literature and art.
Technically, the piece was executed as a painted clay model, with the scene largely staged in paint. The model incorporates functional elements, such as holes for pens, transforming it into a symbolic pen or pencil holder. The frame, crafted from pine and charred to blackened carbon, reinforces the dramatic and foreboding mood. The exterior was further darkened and dusted to evoke the deep, aged tones characteristic of Northern Renaissance masterworks.
