When we opened the Oil Art Advisory gallery in March 2024, in the beautiful market town of Knutsford in Cheshire, we could not have anticipated the incredible abundance of talent waiting to be discovered right on our doorstep. The depth, creativity, and quality of work produced by our local artists have truly surpassed our expectations, and we’ve been both humbled and delighted to showcase their creations. Indeed, it’s been a real joy to witness how the vibrant artistic community here enriches our gallery and inspires visitors from near and far.
David Tragen, whose work seamlessly blends functionality, artistry and craftsmanship, is among the exceptional local talent. Drawing inspiration from nature, he creates contemporary, sculptural, solid wood furniture alongside breathtaking cast sculptures and wall art that embody both elegance and emotion.
His artistic journey was enhanced by his training under the renowned furniture designer and craftsman David Binnington Savage, a master known for his uncompromising dedication to perfection and his ability to transform wood into timeless masterpieces, and this rich foundation is evident in David Tragen’s portfolio, which carries forward Savage’s legacy of excellence while adding his own unique voice to the tradition of sculptural design.
David's ability to weave intricate, fluid forms into his work - most notably through his sculpture featuring the Kelvin wake pattern, inspired by the elegant waves left behind by waterfowl and boats - and his cast bronze "Maelstrom" series, to name just two, speak to his exceptional vision, skill and dedication, making each creation a captivating fusion of art, science and craftsmanship. With their striking originality and sheer complexity, David’s designs are a breath of fresh air.
