Steve Williams is a British sculptor and multidisciplinary artist based in Stockport, Cheshire. After spending over four decades in the commercial sector, Steve made a significant life change in 2020 to pursue sculpture full-time - a shift sparked by a creative reawakening at the Glastonbury Festival in 2017.
A largely self-taught artist, his work is rooted in a deep, intuitive connection with materials - especially stone - and guided by a lifelong fascination with form, structure, and transformation.
Working predominantly in hand-carved stone, Steve’s sculptures span a wide range - from abstract forms such as spirals, toroids, and helixes, to expressive figurative pieces and characterful portrait heads. His work often reflects on the passage of time, erosion, memory, and the tactile qualities of material. Alongside stone, he also works in wood, creates oil paintings and iPad drawings, and has a longstanding interest in urban and architectural photography - particularly of Manchester, Stockport, and international cities such as Hong Kong and Bilbao.
Steve’s artistic development is continually shaped by hands-on learning, residencies, and collaborative environments. He has attended workshops at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and spent a month in 2024 at Tre Luci Studios in Pietrasanta, Italy, immersing himself in traditional and contemporary stone carving practices.
In 2022, Steve co-founded The Sculpture Gallery in Leeds Corn Exchange - a permanent space dedicated to contemporary sculpture - where he exhibits alongside fellow artists and contributes to shaping an active regional arts community. He has participated in numerous exhibitions across the North of England, including Sculpture Show North, In Manchester, and GNAS, and served as a judging panel member for the New Light art prize initiative.
Blending technical skill with a spirit of exploration, Steve Williams brings a fresh, late-blooming voice to the British sculpture scene - one grounded in material, place, and a genuine love of making.
