Simon’s paintings are as versatile as they are captivating, seamlessly blending into both modern and traditional interior settings

Born in Staffordshire in 1971, Simon Quinn was immersed in the world of art from an early age, growing up in a creative family that nurtured his passion for painting. His artistic talents flourished during his studies at Newcastle College, where he refined his technical skills and won the prestigious Challenge Trust Memorial Fund award. Following his education, he embarked on a career in Stoke-on-Trent’s renowned pottery industry, working as a hand decorator for Moorcroft Pottery. His time there, along with his expertise in pottery restoration, deepened his attention to detail—an element that remains central to his fine art practice today.

Simon works predominantly in oils on canvas, drawn to the medium’s fluidity, adaptability, and rich depth of color. “I find oils to be the best medium for expressive figurative work,” he explains. “They allow for great versatility, and I love the luscious colors when creating large, realistic paintings.” His meticulous layering technique enhances the drama of his compositions, while his palette—reminiscent of the vivid tones of the Pre-Raphaelites—imbues his work with a romantic intensity akin to the masterpieces of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones.

Inspired by British masters, Simon frequently visits Manchester Art Gallery to study the works of his artistic influences, including the Pre-Raphaelites and English Impressionists. Their impact is evident in his ability to balance classical beauty with modern storytelling, using light and shadow to create a captivating atmosphere. His subject matter often delves into the world of performance art, depicting ballet dancers, costumed geishas, and enigmatic figures that echo the intimate portraits of Dame Laura Knight and John Singer Sargent. These characters, imbued with grace and mystery, invite viewers to craft their own narratives within the painting.

Beyond his technical prowess, Simon’s paintings resonate on an emotional level, drawing collectors who appreciate both the artistry and the quiet introspection his work evokes. His compositions possess a timeless quality, seamlessly blending into both contemporary and traditional interiors. Whether viewed up close, where fine details emerge, or from afar, where the drama of his subjects takes center stage, his work commands attention in any setting.

As his reputation grows, Simon Quinn continues to refine his craft, solidifying his place among contemporary figurative painters. His ability to capture fleeting moments of stillness and emotion, paired with his exceptional use of oils and strong colouration, ensures his work remains both relevant and enduring. A rising talent in the fine art world, Simon’s paintings offer collectors a unique fusion of classical inspiration and modern expression, making him an artist to watch.
