SHAUN OTHEN
Expressive Figurative | Edinburgh, Scotland | Born in Derbyshire, England
Shaun Othen is a British artist originally from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, now living and working in Edinburgh. His practice is centered around expressive figurative work, blending classical draftsmanship with contemporary techniques.
Othen studied at Falmouth School of Art, where he developed a strong foundation in figurative painting and realism. Early in his career, he found success in the commercial art world, producing detailed illustrations for book covers and international publications. Over time, however, his artistic approach evolved—shifting from precision realism to a looser, more emotive style.
Working primarily in oils and charcoal, Othen combines traditional anatomical understanding with bold, abstract marks. His current work often features dynamic human forms rendered with textured palette knife strokes, soft washes, and gestural lines. The result is a body of work that conveys both technical skill and emotional resonance.
In addition to his studio practice, Othen co-founded the Dev Art Space with his wife, where they lead life-drawing classes aimed at supporting artists who value classical techniques. His artworks are collected internationally and continue to draw attention for their sensitivity, power, and craftsmanship.
