Based in Lancashire, I am a collage artist dedicated to creating contemporary pieces that encapsulate the freedom and vibrancy of the natural world. Drawing inspiration from the artistic traditions of landscape artists like J.M.W. Turner and the expressive use of colour seen in the works of the Fauvist movement, my art seeks to capture the dynamic energy of nature. My pieces are also influenced by the organic forms and vibrant palettes of artists such as Henri Matisse, particularly his later paper cut-outs, which similarly explore the potential of shape, form, and texture through collage.
Each piece in my collection stems from a profound appreciation for the outdoors, where I find a sense of calmness that allows me the mental space to gain clarity and focus, fueling my creative process. Nature, especially the sea, serves as a constant source of inspiration. The intricate play of colours and textures found in landscapes mirrors the ethos of environmental art, which seeks to emphasise the connection between humanity and the earth. Artists like Andy Goldsworthy, whose ephemeral sculptures interact directly with natural elements, have influenced my desire to reflect the transient beauty of nature within my own work.
I craft my designs using tiny pieces of recycled magazine pages, meticulously tearing each one into shape and layering them to create rich shading and depth. This delicate and time-consuming process requires patience and careful attention, allowing me to immerse myself fully in the act of creation. Like Anselm Kiefer’s textural explorations, my technique involves building up layers to evoke a sense of physical depth and complexity, while also honoring the slow, thoughtful rhythms of the natural world.
My use of old, discarded magazines reflects a commitment to recycling and sustainability. In the spirit of environmental art movements, such as the Earthworks of the 1960s and ’70s, my practice aims to support environmental preservation by reducing the need for new materials and minimizing landfill waste. By reimagining these discarded materials, I create new life from what would otherwise be forgotten. With my art, I hope to inspire others to seek out the tranquility found in nature and to embrace a mindful approach to sustainability, seeing the beauty and potential in what surrounds us.
