Jo Quigley, a British artist born in 1969, trained at Winchester School of Art and Kingston University, graduating in 1996 with an MA in Fine Art. After teaching art for over a decade, Jo now concentrates on painting. Additionally, Jo demonstrates her skills to art societies across the South East and uses her experience to write about painting, having published several articles in The Artist magazine.
Jo’s artistic inspiration is drawn from everyday life, with a strong focus on wildlife and human subjects. Due to a particular passion for painting the city and its people, Jo frequently travels to London to observe and photograph people going about their daily routines. This proximity to the bustling city allows Jo to capture the dynamic atmosphere of urban life, resulting in paintings that are intricate and populated and reflect the vibrant environments depicted.
Jo’s work echoes the urban vibrancy found in Camille Pissarro’s “Boulevard Montmartre” series. Pissarro was known for his depictions of bustling city life, capturing the movement, energy, and everyday activities of people in urban settings. Similarly, Jo’s paintings are infused with this dynamic atmosphere, focusing on busy streets and public spaces where people gather. Much as Pissarro did, Jo uses a lively color palette and pays keen attention to the interactions and activities of individuals within the broader cityscape.
