Jack Thompson is a celebrated British photographer, painter and mixed-media artist who lives in Cranage, Cheshire and now splits his time between his home there and the west coast of Ireland. From 2016 to 2019, he was Photographer-in-Residence at Clonter Opera Theatre, where he documented musicians, performers and behind-the-scenes life at the opera and created a major body of work stemming from this residency.
Thompson’s work is known for its poetic, timeless and humanistic qualities, exploring the relationships between people, their environments, and their histories. While primarily a portraitist and documentarian, his photography spans social documentary, theatre, music, landscape and fine art.
A distinctive aspect of his photographic practice is the visual atmosphere he creates: rather than shooting in true black and white, Thompson often retains subtle earthy tones that lend depth and warmth to his images. This is paired with a lovely grainy texture in his prints, giving them an evocative material presence and an almost painterly feel that elevates the emotional resonance of his subjects.
