Dave's original drawings are now available to purchase from the Oil Art Advisory gallery

During the pandemic lockdown of 2020/2021, while most of us were grappling with how to fill an endless stretch of free time, David took a different approach. Instead of simply wondering what to do, he channeled his creativity into crafting a series of humorous, hand-drawn pastiches—an endeavor that would coalesce into a book.

Anarchy in the Art Gallery is a bold, hilarious, and wildly imaginative illustrated book that rewrites Western art and cultural history with a playful twist. Time and space are no boundaries in this reimagined journey, where the familiar becomes fantastically unexpected.

Picture Lowry venturing into science fiction, Jane Austen throwing punches in a cage fight, Magritte nervously taking a driving test, and Anne Hathaway stepping into the spotlight as the real genius behind Shakespeare’s plays. Every page is a collision of worlds, where characters, ideas, and events are plucked from their original contexts and reassembled in delightfully unpredictable ways.

Two Bruegel peasants pull off a clock heist from a Dali painting, a tourist pedals leisurely through Van Gogh’s cornfield, and Picasso’s Demoiselles d'Avignon splash into Monet’s waterlily pond. Art, literature, philosophy, and pop culture all come together in a riotous mashup of creativity.

Fresh, funny, and unapologetically irreverent, Anarchy in the Art Gallery turns our cultural history on its head and Dave's original drawings, beautifully mounted and framed under glass, are now available to purchase from the Oil Art Advisory Gallery.

If you're a Gen X or older, you're going to enjoy this collection, but be warned, David Colton has a PhD in contemporary art philosophy and some of his references demand previous exposure to a broad spectrum of the arts in order to comprehend the punch-lines, particularly in the Anarchy in the Art Gallery series.

Beside the Anarchy in the Art Gallery drawings, which all appeard in the book, we also have some works which predate it.

SERIES: ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN THE NEXT HALF HOUR

A surreal journey through 1960s and 70s children's television nostalgia. The drawings are not limited by time or space; characters, situations and ideas are taken out of context and mixed to create new stories and new possibilities.

We have 10 original drawings in this series which may feature in a future book.

SERIES: TALES FROM THE OFFICE

This is an earlier collection of drawings produced by Dave. Both these series helped formulate the idea to create a group of drawings with a coherent narrative, which then lead to the development of Anarchy in the Art Gallery.

We have 3 drawing in this series.
