ANTHONY TREMMAGLIA
Contemporary Abstract | Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Anthony Tremmaglia is a Canadian artist whose work bridges the boundaries between illustration, design, and fine art. Educated in Advanced Illustration at Sheridan College and Graphic Design at Algonquin College, he has developed a practice that transforms two-dimensional surfaces into visually tactile, sculptural experiences. Tremmaglia’s pieces often appear as though carved from stone or layered with digital effects, yet every element is created entirely by hand. This interplay of texture, form, and illusion draws viewers into a space where the human figure and organic elements dissolve into abstraction, leaving behind an atmosphere that feels both ancient and contemporary.
Throughout his career, Tremmaglia has shown his work in both national and international contexts, from solo exhibitions at the Ottawa Art Gallery to participation in major fairs such as Art Palm Beach and Design Shanghai. His recent series, Refugia (2021–2023), explores resilience and renewal through imagery that weaves together stone-like textures, bodily forms, and subtle infusions of color. By intentionally avoiding overt narratives or sociopolitical references, Tremmaglia allows his work to exist in a timeless, open-ended dialogue with the viewer. His practice encourages slow, contemplative engagement, offering an experience that resonates on both a physical and emotional level.
Tremmaglia’s paintings are defined by their tension between abstraction and representation. Using acrylic, charcoal, chalk, and mixed media on paper mounted to wood panels, he creates highly textural surfaces that blur the line between stone, body, and landscape. His recent series, Refugia (2021–2023), explores themes of renewal and survival through interwoven imagery of organic and mineral forms, accented with chalk details and earthy greens. While his work can appear digitally manipulated or photographic at first glance, each piece is fully hand-rendered. Finished with plexiglass framing that enhances their polished presentation, Tremmaglia’s paintings carry a sculptural quality, offering a timeless and contemplative experience. By avoiding direct socio-political references, his practice encourages viewers to engage on a personal and emotional level, discovering their own connections within his layered imagery.
